plantarfasciitisThe annual “barefoot for bare feet” hosted by Georgia State’s men basketball team was held at the Georgia State University Sports Arena. The team, led by Ron Hunter, played the University of Texas-Arlington. Hunter and his assistant coaches all worked without socks and shoes to help the charity Samaritan’s Feet. Samaritan’s Feet works to raise awareness for the many children around the world who live without proper footwear, and the health concerns they therefore face. Hunter has hosted the “barefoot for bare feet” game in the past, and this is the fourth time he has done it as coach at Georgia State.

The Impact of Barefoot Running


-Running without shoes changes the motion of your running, as most running is done by landing on the heel of the feet.
-Running barefoot requires a different way of running; the landing is done on the front part of the feet.

The Advantages of Barefoot Running


-When running and landing on the front feet, the impact on the feet and ankle is reduced, this can reduce stress injuries.
-It strengthens muscles in the feet and ankles and the lower legs.
-Balance of the body is improved and there is a greater sensory input from the feet to the rest of the body.

The Drawbacks of Barefoot Running
-No protection while running, makes it likely that runners will land on sharp objects and scrapes, bruises and cuts on the feet will result. -Blisters may form.
-Possibility of plantar fascia problems.
-Risk of getting Achilles tendonitis.

So what can runners do to make barefoot running safe? It’s best to make a slow transition from running shoes to barefoot running. Once the feet begin to adjust, try walking, then jogging and gradually increasing the distance. Minimalist running shoes may also be an option.

Treatment for Sufferers of Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis occurs when the ligament that runs from the heel bone to the base of the tones becomes inflamed; the inflammation is was usually causes the heel pain. What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis refers to heel and arch pain caused by an inflammation of the connective tissues on the bottom of the foot.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

• Ill-fitting shoes

• Excessive running

• Overpronation

How Can It Be Treated?


• Conservative measures – anti-inflammatories, ice packs, stretching exercises, physical therapy, orthotic devices. • Shockwave therapy – sends sound waves to the areas where pain is experience. Requires multiple sessions. This is used for very persistent cases of plantar fasciitis.
• Ultrasound-guided technique with steroid injections into the plantar fascia. This is from a relatively new and small study, but was shown to be effective in most cases treated.

heelpainAccording to a study conducted by scientists at Guangzhou Dongsheng Hospital and Guangzhou Social Welfare House, acupuncture is an effective treatment for heel pain. Sixty-six patients with some developed form of heel pain were used as a part of the experiment directed by researcher Xu Xuemeng and his team. The control group was compromised of participants that were given experiment drugs and the rest of the patients were given a filiform acupuncture needle treatment.

Within six months, the participants that had received acupuncture had an effectiveness rating of 97% while the effectiveness rating of the control group was just 76%. Acupuncture has been especially effective for those suffering from Achilles tendonitis and plantar fasciitis.

Causes of Heel Pain

● Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

● Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

● Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

orthotics1Carnegie Mellon University assistant professor of robotics Yong-Lae Park and other collaborators from Harvard University, the University of Southern California, MIT, and BioSensics have developed an active orthotic that can replicate natural motions in the ankle. The robotic device would aid people affected by neuromuscular disorders of the foot and ankle associated with cerebral palsy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis or stroke. Such gait disorders include drop foot, where the forefoot drops because of weakness or paralysis, and equinus, where the upward bending motion of the ankle is limited.  The advantage of active, powered devices is their ability to improve function and help re-educate the neuromuscular system.

What is Ankle Foot Orthotics?

Orthotics is physical aids used to support weak limbs or direct the proper function of limbs. Often they are used to support the ankle and foot. Such orthotics is known as AFOs. AFOs help strengthen the muscles or train them to function in the proper position. AFOs can also benefit muscles that need to be lengthened or loosened.

Why might you need orthotics?

Orthotics is often prescribed when someone is suffering from diseases that affect the musculature, like polio and multiple sclerosis. However, more common conditions like arthritis and stroke, or those that “toe in”, may also require orthotics.
